How to Hide the Tumblr Follow Button, Logo and Controls

Every Tumblr blog shows a bar in the top-right corner with the Tumblr logo and a Follow button. Here are two ways to hide it – the quick one takes about a minute.

Every Tumblr blog shows a small bar in the top-right corner with the Tumblr logo, a Follow button and a dashboard icon. It’s useful for Tumblr users, but if you’re running a portfolio or a brand site it can look out of place. Here are two ways to hide it – the quick one takes about a minute.

Method 1 – Advanced options + Custom CSS (recommended)

  1. On a computer, go to tumblr.com/customize/your-blog-name.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the left panel and click Advanced options.
  3. Switch Promote Tumblr! to off. This removes the follow teaser that pops up for visitors.
  4. In the Add Custom CSS box, paste the following on a new line:
body > .tmblr-iframe.tmblr-iframe--unified-controls,
.tmblr-iframe-compact .tmblr-iframe--unified-controls,
.tmblr-iframe--follow-teaser {
  display: none !important;
  opacity: 0 !important;
}
  1. Click the back arrow, then Save. Refresh your blog – the corner controls are gone.

Method 2 – Add the code to your theme HTML

Use this if you’d rather keep the rule inside the theme itself.

  1. On the customize screen click Edit HTML under Custom theme.
  2. Press Ctrl + F (Windows) or Cmd + F (Mac) and search for </head>.
  3. Click at the start of that line, press Enter to make a blank line above it and paste:
<style>
  body .tmblr-iframe--follow-teaser,
  body .tmblr-iframe--gdpr-banner,
  .tmblr-iframe--unified-controls { display: none !important; }
</style>
  1. Click Update Preview, then the back arrow and Save.

Good to know

  • You’re still on Tumblr. Hiding the controls doesn’t stop people following you from their dashboard, and your blog still appears in Tumblr search – it just removes the overlay from your own pages.
  • Logged-in Tumblr users may still see a small dashboard control depending on their settings; the CSS above hides it for everyone else.
  • Want to remove the Stash credit too? That’s covered by the Full License, which gives you a completely unbranded blog.

Frequently asked questions

Is hiding the follow button allowed?

Yes. Tumblr lets you turn off “Promote Tumblr!” in its own settings, and custom CSS is a supported feature of custom themes.

Will this hide the cookie/GDPR banner?

Method 2 includes the banner class. Be aware that if you have EU/UK visitors you may still need to show a consent notice – consider leaving that line out if that applies to you.

The controls came back after I changed theme.

If you used Method 2, the code lived in the old theme. Add it again, or switch to Method 1 which stays with your blog.
